CA1-18 Tumor Marker
The tumor marker assay, CA1-18, using Anti-Tennessee Antigen Monoclonal and Polyclonal antibodies detects the tumor marker Tennessee Antigen. Tennessee Antigen has been isolated from primary and metastatic adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract. Different technologies for measuring Tennessee Antigen have been utilized, including Enzyme Immunoassay. The CA1-18 assay has been evaluated in eighteen clinical investigations, using more than 6,000 subjects and 8,500 samples, and these tests have shown the assay to be highly accurate in the detection of colorectal carcinoma, particularly early stage carcinoma: nearly 96% accurate in the detection of Duke’s A carcinoma and 94% accurate in the detection of Duke’s B, 79% accurate in the detection of Duke’s C, and 100% accurate in the detection of Duke’s D. By contrast, the only FDA approved tumor marker for the detection of colon cancer is CEA. CEA levels are known to be elevated in the advanced stages of colorectal cancer but not in the early stages when the disease is actually curable.

CA1-18 is a convenient, accurate and inexpensive aid in the diagnosis and management of colorectal and lung cancer patients. The CA1-18 assay detect Tennessee Antigen in human serum. The immunological characterization and immunological activity of Tennessee Antigen documents it to be a novel tumor associated antigen.
About Colon Cancer
The American Cancer Society lists colorectal cancer as the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in North America after lung and breast cancers. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.
The American Cancer Society estimate that in 2006, 148,610 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and that 55,170 people will die of the disease. The relatively high mortality rate is due in part to the lack of accurate screening tests for the detection of the disease in its early stages.
CA1-18 has been shown to be a useful aid in the diagnosis of early stage colon cancer where the opportunity exists for potentially curative surgical intervention. CA1-18 is also is a convenient, accurate and inexpensive aid in the diagnosis and management of colorectal and lung cancer patients.
